Hey all,

Phil and I have talked and his crew has been working away at the site.  They have implemented some changes and would love for u all take a peak.  The biggest changes are in the Schools and Projects area.  Please note that the databases are not up there yet.  Those are still in development.  We have the concept of having people become members if they want to post to the databases.  Anyone can search the databases.  We want people to be able to add their own information easily, but Phil wants his people to be able to have some measure of control if anyone is inappoprioate etc..

Take a look and let us know what u think:

We will be registering a domain, fyi.

Thanks all... hope u are doing well.

I am still on the bandwagon and determined that we are going to keep things rolling with our project. Phil and co at the Clerc Center have actually made some progress. The databases are starting to take shape. Take a look at the following email from Phil. Please note that this is still testing and not live yet because pieces aren't done. I am excited about keeping the ball rolling and getting this info out to folks. "The good news is that Sydney has been working on the databases behind the pages. He has completed a registration form. The test page is at: http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/vcweb/test.asp, but it is not linked up to the Web pages yet (http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/vcweb/). If you go to the schools page (http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/vcweb/schools.aspx), there is a search tool at the bottom so that you can search for information on a given school or state. Try it. You'll have to scroll down to the bottom to see the results - I'll be cleaning that up, too. The results are based upon the ones we have already entered from the variety of sources. If you click on the school or the person's name, a small window opens. We need to clean that up, but when it is fixed, it will give you more information on the school or contact person. Sydney hopes to have something ready this week for us to announce to a small number of folks to test out and make suggestions for improvements. Assuming that goes well and there are not a lot of fixes, we can go live in the middle to end of September." Next are any of you attending or taking part in the Keystone Conference? http://www.keystoneconference.org I am planning on registering ASD as a site and in the process of determining which strands. Are any of you going or taking part? Also, I saw a post for proposals for NECC: Submit proposals to showcase interactive videoconferencing programs and projects at NECC 2005 now! Deadline is October 6. This past summer the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC), the world's largest K-12 educational technology conference, highlighted a special program emphasis on interactive videoconferencing (IVC) and its growing impact on the K-12 community. www.neccsite.org School-based initiatives that have uniquely expanded IVC usage beyond general course instruction and were engaging and motivating for students. The post is a lot longer, but I don't want to make this a novel. I feel like I want to be doing something to get us out there. Does anyone think that this initiative that we are embarking on right now might be something we could present on? Anyone have any thoughts on this? I would be interested if anyone would like to think about it with me. Lastly, I was asked to be on a panel for an FCC symposium in October. I am not sure of the name of it right now. But the goal is to shed a more positive light on the e-rate by highlighting some of the successes and importance of broadband at the K-12 level. I plan on including our work in this. I also want to share the successes of other schools at our level. This is an opportunity to talk about K-12 deaf education and how we are using technology. I am open to thoughts of things to include. Please let me know if there are things you would want shared. Stay in touch everyone* let's keep it going. There is one workshop called .Positive Growth: Integrating Videoconferencing Into Classrooms of Hearing Impaired and Deaf Students. One of the presenters saw us on the list of sites and contacted me and asked if we would communicate directly with them at the end. Kind of neat. I think we are trying to work it out. I just started using it. Would love to connect with you, Shelley. And Harold and co. have extended it to anyone of us interested. I think we could all connect and work with it. We get comfortable and then see how it goes in our communities. There is a free version and a private community. DeafEd has a private community. I am employed by Lenawee Intermediate School District in Adrian, MI as the Coordinator of Distance Learning. Our district has been active with video conferencing for students for many years now, but just last year we started using the technology to enhance learning opportunities for Deaf students in Lenawee County taught by Jane Mose. At that time, our students communicated with students from Burnaby South, British Columbia. We connected with Karen Warren and some students and staff from the American School for the Deaf during a presentation at the Keystone Conference last fall in Indianapolis and again last week for the MACUL educational technology conference in Detroit, MI. Keystone Conference http://www.keystoneconference.org/ MACUL http://www.macul.org/ I look forward to getting to know and working with the people on this list, Greg Greg Marten Coordinator - Distance Learning Lenawee Intermediate School District gmarten@lisd.k12.mi.us 517.265.1694 http://cemat.lisd.k12.mi.us/ From popson_s@firn.edu Wed Mar 23 11:08:15 2005 Received: from mail.firn.edu (update.firn.edu [150.176.12.38]) by lists.asd-1817.org (8.12.8/8.12.5) with ESMTP id j2NG8FH3029804 for ; Wed, 23 Mar 2005 11:08:15 -0500 Received: from [10.1.90.30] (unverified [216.77.73.135]) by firn.edu (SurgeMail 2.1d) with ESMTP id 28670445 for ; Wed, 23 Mar 2005 11:11:49 -0500 User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/11.0.0.040405 Date: Wed, 23 Mar 2005 11:10:13 -0500 Subject: [Videoconf] introduction From: Shelley Popson To: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: <5.2.0.9.0.20050321111620.01556d38@lisd.k12.mi.us> Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Server: High Performance Mail Server - http://surgemail.com X-BeenThere: videoconf@lists.asd-1817.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Video Conferencing collaboration in schools and programs educating the Deaf. I am interested to find out who else is on this list and what we are doing or are planning to do... My name is Shelley Popson Ardis (just married *smile*) and I work in Florida as a Technology Specialist providing outreach - training, consultation and support for any educational staff person who serves a student with hearing loss. Traditionally we have provided services to self-contained classes but are finding more and more students in general education settings. The itinerant teachers in those settings are looking for more support from our Center. The center is called Resource Material & Technology Center for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing. It is part of a statewide network of agencies to provide services to benefit students with disabilities and we specialize in deafness. I'm based at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine. Teachers around the state have been doing a variety of "distance learning" activities but are just beginning to get involved with videoconferencing. We have a lot of trouble with firewalls and the deaf ed classes being a low priority for technology folks in districts. FSDB is looking into doing a variety of videoconferencing projects. We hope to do some testing and pilot projects this spring with some science classes. We are looking into doing videostreaming clips to support teachers and parents. We are doing some on campus chatting using iChat. FSDB also has recently installed some Sorenson systems for students and staff. My center does a variety of videoconferencing using webcams (Logitech and iSight), Polycom ViaVideo, and Sorenson systems. A lot of my Center's communications are with teachers throughout Florida and faculty involved in the Join Together grant - info at Deafed.net. Looking forward to working with others on this list.
